“God is…” A Lesson From Psalms

I once did a book study of Psalms using curriculum from Kay Arthur.  It was a great little study and by the time I was finished I realized there was one element that would make a wonderful addition to what I had just studied.  I sat down and carefully re-read each Psalm with the idea of completing the sentence “God is…”  What I found absolutely stunned me.  There are so many words to describe who God is all right in Psalms.  It’s quite a lengthy list not counting the repeats but well worth the effort.  If you are needing some encouragement I challenge you to try this.  By reading five Psalms a day (I know some of them are long) you can make it through the book in 30 days.  I’ve included some of my favorite “God is…” statements just to tempt you.  I hope it encourages you.

God is…

the One who lifts my head 3:3

my King 5:2; 44:4

a Stronghold 9:9; 31:2: 48:3

the Portion of my inheritance 16:5

the Defense of my life 27:1

my Hiding Place 32:7; 119:114

my exceeding Joy 43:4

When you are done keep your list close by.  I like to review mine every now and then, especially when I’m feeling down.
